There’s something about a pair of vibrant stripes peeking out from under a pair of pants that just adds a bit of fun to any outfit. I have a young Gen Z friend who I play pickleball with and he’s always sporting super fun socks with little animals or colorful stripes. He definitely runs faster on the court in his fox socks!

Then I got to thinking about how the fashion world dictates that vertical stripes are slimming and horizontal stripes are rarely seen on any piece of clothing other than a top. So, why are the stripes on socks vertical rather than horizontal?

The Fashion World’s Love for Horizontal Stripes

When it comes to sock design, horizontal stripes have long been the go-to choice, and there are a few reasons why this trend has stood the test of time.

First, there is the practical aspect. Horizontal stripes are easier to knit on a circular sock machine, which is how most socks are made. The process of creating socks involves knitting in the round, which naturally lends itself to horizontal stripes that wrap around the sock. Vertical stripes, on the other hand, require more complex knitting techniques and often result in a less comfortable fit, as the socks tend to lose their elasticity and snugness.

Since we are using the print-on-demand model on our socks with an all-over print design, does it really matter if we make our designs vertical or horizontal? While the process is different, the public’s preference for horizontal stripes on socks over vertical is clear.

The Aesthetic Factor

Horizontal stripes add visual interest without overwhelming the overall design of the sock. They break up the length of the sock in a way that’s pleasing to the eye, creating a balanced look that works well with a variety of outfits. Vertical stripes, while eye-catching, can sometimes elongate the appearance of the leg or foot in a way that feels less harmonious.

From a fashion standpoint, horizontal stripes also have a certain timeless appeal. They’re playful yet classic, making them a versatile choice for everything from casual wear to more polished ensembles. For many, they evoke a sense of fun and whimsy, which is why they’ve become such a staple in the world of socks, especially among those who love to make a statement with their footwear.

Classic Stripes on Socks

As a designer, I’ve embraced the horizontal stripe for its ease and visual appeal, but I still love to play with color and pattern to keep things fresh and exciting. I’ve added some new striped socks featuring lots of different color combinations, arranged in that classic horizontal style. Whether you’re looking for something fun and quirky to wear on the pickleball court or just want to add a pop of color to your everyday wardrobe, these socks are designed to make you smile.

In our striped socks collection, you will find unexpected color combinations and stripes that aren’t exactly symmetrical. We put our Taco Tuesday Salsa stripes on socks – Pico de Gallo, Quesdo Dip, Salsa Guajillo Chile, and Salsa Verde. We made some pattern play socks combining polka dots, chevrons and fun shapes in stripes. We also have some fun striped socks for the holidays.
