Blue Raspberry: Origins | Why Blue? | Color Combos | Polka Dots | Stripes | Checks | Plaids
When you think of blue raspberry, what’s the first image that pops into your head? For me, it’s the bright blue slushies I bought walking home from the library over summer vacation. The blue tongue you sported for the next two days was well worth that delicious icy beverage. But have you ever wondered where this unique flavor came from or why raspberries—normally red—ended up blue in the world of sweets?
The Origins of the Flavor
There are lots of red fruits – strawberries, cherries, raspberries, apples, cranberries – and candy makers needed a way to differentiate between the flavors. Originally, raspberry-flavored candies and syrups were also red and there really was no way to tell the flavors apart on sight. In the 1970s, candy makers were on a quest to create a new red fruit flavor that stood out.
Enter the FD&C Blue No. 1 dye, also known as Brilliant Blue. This dye was approved for food use in 1969, and soon after, the iconic blue raspberry was born. Candy makers created a sensation by combining this bright blue color with a tart raspberry flavor. Blue raspberry quickly carved out its niche in the world of sweet treats, becoming a favorite in candies, drinks, and frozen desserts.
Why Blue Raspberry?
The invention of blue raspberry wasn’t just about standing out from the other red fruit flavors. It was about creating an experience. The striking blue hue attracted attention in the crowded market of sweet treats. It’s also instantly recognizable, making it a powerful tool for making memories. The flavor itself balances the natural tartness of raspberries with a sugary kick. This combination of striking visual and taste appeal has kept blue raspberry popular for decades.
These Blue Raspberry fabric designs are part of our Jelly Candy Fruit Slices fabric collection inspired by the classic Boston Jelly Candy Fruit Slices! This collection features blue raspberry designs that capture the essence of those nostalgic jelly fruit slices, set against backgrounds of white, mint green, purple, yellow, and hot pink.
