The enchanting polka dot pattern has a history as vibrant as the dots themselves. Originating in the mid-19th century, this playful design gained popularity in the fashion world thanks to its catchy name. The term “polka” likely stems from the lively dance style of the same name, which was all the rage during that era. The English name “polka dots”, however, first appeared in print in 1857, when the “Godey’s Lady’s Book,” a women’s magazine of the time, described a “scarf of muslin, for light summer wear, surrounded by a scalloped edge, embroidered in rows of round polka dots.” Prior to this, spotted fabric had gone by different names, including dotted-Swiss, lunares (Spanish), quinconce (French), and thalertupfen (German). With its repetitive, circular motif, the polka dot became synonymous with joy, movement, and a touch of whimsy.
